Edith's English Website

General: I have visited Mexico several times. There are very few restaurants in Mexico - not even in Cancun - that can impress me the way Edith's did, with its outstanding food and great ambience. This is probably the best restaurant in Cabo San Lucas in the "Nouveau Mexican" category - that's a large category that covers just about all nice restaurants in Los Cabos.

Food: WARNING - you will not find a typical Mexican menu here. If you are from Texas, the menu will make you think you're in LA; however, having travelled extensively in Mexico, I've learned to appreciate Mexican food that is not genuinely "Mexican" simply because it's a large country with lots of foreign influence. So forget about burritos and chiminchangas for now.

We had a big group, so we sampled dishes from classic Mexican corn turnovers ("empanadas" - actually they're not classically-prepared) to steak and lobster. All I can say is that everything is prepared to perfection. Some dishes taste more continental than Mexican, but you can tell that the chef put her heart into it. What impressed us the most are the appetizers - pick any and you won't be disappointed. Desserts are a bit too American to be memorable - even with the impressive outdoor flambee show - partially because what we had before them were so spectacular.

Ambience: This restaurant is located in an unusual place - right between two popular tourist hangouts of downtown pier and Playa Medano - but it doesn't have a view of either place. Nevertheless, the restaurant itself is real colorful and fun - partly because of the crowded mix of tourists, frequent locals (well, tourists too but they just stay longer) and musicians, and partly because of the outdoor setting and nice atypical Mexican decoration. The hostesses and wait staff are equally as enthusiastic as the customers and they uplift the whole atmosphere - I guess I would be too if my restaurant is packed every night.

Value: This place is not cheap even by California standards. For the quality and quantity, however, it's not bad either. Compared with those restaurants that give out great coupons and then charge $20 for an over-fried fish (you can find plenty of them in Los Cabos), you will be far better off going to Edith's. It's not the kind of place that I can afford every night, but I certainly don't mind paying $40 for one night here when I visit Cabo San Lucas.

Bottomline: If you insist on having an authentic Mexican treat in Cabo San Lucas, try < > which I may review later; if you simply want the most delicious food in Cabo San Lucas in a fun atmosphere - AND you really don't mind been completely surrounded by half-drunk sombrero-wearing gringos - this is your place! Forget "Crazy Lobster" or "Mango Grove", or one of those tourist traps on the pier, and give yourself a real treat.

Last Word: The typical wait there ANY NIGHT is minimum one hour, but if you make a reservation the day before or even in the morning, you'll be cool - but there's no guarantee (like ALL Mexican restaurants) that you'll get in at 7pm if you have a 7pm reservation. Patience is always an indispensable virtue in Mexico. :)
